Additional Rights of Interment

The Situation

Many family members have asked to inter cremains on top of existing graves to conserve space, and be on the family lot without using a full grave space. As a result of this, the Board of Managers approved the idea of additional right of interment on lots throughout the cemetery on October 21, 2004.

The Facts

Cave Hill Cemetery sells burial rights and the company owns the land.  Our certificates of ownership tell explicitly how many burial rights have been purchased.  If someone wants additional burials on the lot other than what has been specified by the certificate, they must pay a fee for this additional right, which can be purchased on a pre-need basis.

The Fee

For each additional right of burial on a lot, a charge of 50% of the current value of the grave space, up to a maximum of $2500.00, will be assessed.  Also, the applicable opening and closing fees will need to be factored into the total price of the burial if the burial is an immediate, or at-need, situation.

Advantages of the Option

  • The family increases the number of spaces on a lot
  • The family member saves 50% of the cost of another space
  • Cave Hill increases the sales life of the cemetery by conserving space
  • Cave Hill adds more funds to the Preservation Fund for cemetery maintenance

The Process

Cave Hill will allow up to three burials in one grave space: one full size and two cremation burials or three cremation burials.  Cremains may also be interred in the shrub space near the monument if applicable.  In monument and raised marker sections, the monument may be used for memorialization of one burial and the other two spaces must be marked with grass level markers or one raised maker and two grass level markers.  A raised marker space may use one raised marker and two grass level markers.  In grass level marker sections, the markers must all be grass level.
